Steeped in over 700 years of history, The Haunch of Venison is one of the region’s oldest and most intriguing pubs, with records dating back to around 1320 when it housed craftsmen building Salisbury Cathedral’s iconic spire. Step inside, and you’ll discover a treasure trove of quirks and legends. Known for its traditional feel, with a Venison dish always on the menu, the pub’s charm extends to its unique features, like the marble-tiled floor, repurposed from the nearby Cathedral, and the rare "Horsebox" bar. This cozy nook boasts one of only six surviving pewter-topped bars in the country, along with a beautifully carved wooden arch and several rare features, it is rumoured that Winston Churchill and Dwight Eisenhower once plotted in the Horsebox Bar while planning the D-Day landings in 1944. Salisbury Cathedral is an unmissable landmark that has captivated visitors for over 800 years. Home to Britain’s tallest spire, this Gothic masterpiece boasts the world’s oldest working clock and the best-preserved original Magna Carta (one of only four surviving copies worldwide). During the tour, you will hear why the cathedral had to be moved from nearby Old Sarum, and how this move resulted in the Gothic masterpiece we see today. As you marvel at the medieval architecture, you will also discover how the now-famous tower was added and the problems the additional weight caused to the rest of the building. You will also learn about Salisbury Cathedral’s need for wet weather and why it's prone to flooding. At the end of the tour, you will have the chance to see the best-preserved copy of the Magna Carta, a document of international importance, and understand why this 800-year-old set of laws still has relevance today.
