Palazzo Vecchio
Palazzo dei Priori, Palazzo della Signoria, Palazzo del Comune, Palazzo Ducale or Palazzo Vecchio? All these names indicate the city’s seat of Government, in the beginning it was the seat of the Republic, later of the Duchy, of the Kingdom of Italy and today is the city’s government house; the mayor has here his office. The Palace, extremely rich in history, is also a wonderful museum. Very important decisions were taken here, as well as heartfelt speeches and political overthrows. Cosimo the older was here imprisoned, later the Palace became Cosimo I de Medici’s greatness symbol. Full of artworks, it was mostly a marketing operation, aimed at glorifying Cosimo I and his wife Eleonora di Toledo. The Palace hides secret passages and places that show the greatness of the Florentine Republic. The tour includes the two main floors of the Palace, ending in the wardrobe room, where is possible to admire the maps of all the known nations in the middle age.
