Lyttelton Shore Excursion - Sea Kayaking, Quail Island & Harbour
Spend a day Sea Kayaking in Lyttelton Harbour. This tour includes transport from Lyttelton Port, lunch, kayaking gear and a local guide.
This tour is suited to individuals, couples and small groups.
After a scenic drive to Charteris Bay, we’ll get you set up with your kayaking gear and lifejacket. Don’t worry if you’re new to kayaking—your guide will walk you through the basics, including paddle strokes and safety tips, so you feel confident on the water.
We'll paddle to Quail Island and learn about it's fascinating history; it was once a leper colony and later used for Antarctic expedition training. Today, it’s a tranquil nature reserve. If the tide allows, we’ll even paddle past a ship’s graveyard and explore sea caves on the island's far side!
After a stunning morning on the water, we’ll stop at one of Quail Island’s gorgeous beaches to enjoy a picnic lunch. The afternoon is yours to explore the island’s walking trails, relax on the beach, or continue paddling with your guide.

Quail Island
Kayak around Quail Island. Explore the ship's graveyard. Visit Swimmers Beach.
Lyttelton
This tour starts and finishes in the Small township of Lyttelton. You will have time before or after your tour to explore the small township and sample some of the town's shopping and cafe.
Lyttelton Harbour
You will have many opportunities to capture amazing photos of both on and off the water throughout the day. On this tour, you will transported from Lyttelton by minivan to one of the small inner harbour beaches, where you will start kayaking. Quail Island is a small island in the centre of Lyttelton Harbour. The island is a recreational reserve rich with history. If time and weather conditions allow, you will have the chance to circumnavigate the island or walk the tracks on the island.

Meeting / End Points
- The cruise ship shuttle will stop in Lyttelton at the Norwich Quay bus stop (opposite Independent Provedoring Co, no 20 Norwich Quay) before heading into Christchurch. A white branded car or minivan will collect you at Norwich Quay bus stop, and your guide will be wearing a branded uniform.
