It was one of the most important Etruscan cities from the fourth to sixth centuries BC and is rich in archaeological remains, both Etruscan and Roman. See several alabaster workshops, as this is one of Volterra's most profitable natural resources.
As you travel between Volterra and San Gimignano stop at a local farm to enjoy a typical Tuscan lunch before taking an afternoon stroll around the historic center of San Gimignano, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town is renowned for its Vernaccia di San Gimignano wine, one of the few DOCG white wines of Italy, and has also reintroduced the farming of saffron which was cultivated here in the Middle Ages as an important part of the city’s economy. Depending on where your ship docks, your driver will either be waiting on the dock as close to your ship as possible. If there are two gangplank exits he will stand in the centre of both. Or your driver will be waiting after the new passenger terminal that you will have to walk through. He will be holding a sign with your name on it.
