Do you remember that scene when Margo Durrell sunbathed under a shrine, to the surprise and aversion of the young priest? She was sunbathing in the Mouse Island. Located at Kanoni Peninsula the Mouse Island is considered as one of the most popular landmakrs around the world and that's becaise of its shape. It looks like a mouse! The nature that surrounds is its magical and the monastery on the top that offers panoramic views around the peninsula make it the best place to film a serie. So, it’s not a surprise that it was chosen as a filming location for the Durrells series!
Just south of the city is the Mon Repos Palace, which doubles as the home of Countess Mavrodaki in the series. Now an archaeological museum, it was once the summer residence of the Greek royal family and was the birthplace of our very own Greek, Prince Philip. This imposing neoclassical palace was a gift out of love for a beautiful lady but also the object of conflict between the former royal family and the state. This exceptional palace was built in 1831 according to the plans of the English architect Whitmore, as a summer residence of the English Commissioner Frederic Adam, for the sake of his beloved Corfu Nina Palatianou, who dreamed of living in a small palace in the countryside. In 1863 Empress Sissy of Austria settled there for a long time and left her own mansion, also known as Achillion Palace.
Time seems to have stopped in Danilia village… Folklore museums, stone paved roads and medieval houses create a unique scenery of traditional charm. The biggest part of the outdoor scenes of ''The Durrells'' was shot in Danilia Village, or "the Bouas Village», near Kontokali, in the northeast of the island. This is a replica of a traditional 1930s Corfiot village that was created by the Corfiot Bouas family in the 1970s. Since then, it is loved by tourists who come to experience the magic vibe of this place. In Danilia village you’ll find beautiful stone made Venetian houses, little traditional shops, a museum, as well as an old-fashioned coffee shop. It’s not the first time that Danilia village is used as a filming location. James Bond movie “For your eyes only”, starring Roger Moore and "The Greek Tycoon" starring Antoni Quinn was also filmed in Danilia village!
