The King Abdullah Mosque is definitely one of the gems in Amman. Its distinctive blue dome, beautifully decorated with Quranic inscriptions stands out immediately. The mosque was completed in 1989 as a memorial by the late King Hussain to his grandfather. It can host up to 7000 worshippers inside and a further 3000 in the courtyard. It also includes a small women’s section for around 500 worshippers. The Islamic museum inside the mosque contains a small collection of photographs and personal effects of King Abdullah I and provides an insight into the history of the Royal Family. The King Abdullah Mosque is the only mosque to openly welcome non-Muslim visitors.
The Citadel is one of the best-known attractions in Amman. Located on the highest hill of Amman (Jabal Al Qala’a), the beautiful remains of the Roman Temple of Hercules can be seen from everywhere and add to the unique landscape of the city. The Citadel has had a long history of occupation by many great civilizations which makes it an interesting and important attraction. There is a lot to see at the Citadel. The most striking sights of the Citadel are the Temple of Hercules, the Umayyad Palace, the Archaeological Museum, and a Byzantine Church. The Temple of Hercules was built during the reign of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (AD 161-80). Looking at its hand-carved remains, one can only imagine the beauty and vastness of the Temple in its glory days. Apart from its history and importance, the Citadel serves as the perfect spot to enjoy the sweeping views of the downtown area.
