Castel Sant'Angelo has stood guard over the Tiber for for 2,000 years, first as a symbol of Rome's imperial authority, then as a papal fortress. That was the Antonine emperors' burial place until Caracalla, and it was originally the mausoleum of the Roman emperor Hadrian. The fort is built in the shape of a circle encircled by a square, with each corner of the square covered by an individually constructed barbican, or outwork, and the central circle containing halls, chapels, residences, gardens, and other amenities. Following a quick overview of the area and the Castel from the outside, you will enter the castle and hear about the Passetto di Borgo, a tiny elevated passage that connects the Castel to the Vatican and was featured in Dan Brown's Angels & Demons (closed to the public). Our guide will take you on a tour of the castle's beautiful halls, conserved artworks, and Papal apartments while explaining the castle's history. When you reach the fortress's summit, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of Rome.
