Now we have some of the most spectacular and dynamic harbours in New Zealand. Quail Island is the largest of three small islands in Lyttelton Harbour and rich in history. Spend a day Sea Kayaking in Lyttelton Harbour. This tour includes transport from Lyttelton Port, lunch, kayaking gear and a local guide. After a scenic drive to Charteris Bay, we’ll get you set up with your kayaking gear and lifejacket. Don’t worry if you’re new to kayaking—your guide will walk you through the basics, including paddle strokes and safety tips, so you feel confident on the water. We'll paddle to Quail Island and learn about it's fascinating history; it was once a leper colony and later used for Antarctic expedition training. Today, it’s a tranquil nature reserve. If the tide allows, we’ll even paddle past a ship’s graveyard and explore sea caves on the island's far side! After a stunning morning on the water, we’ll stop at one of Quail Island’s gorgeous beaches to enjoy a picnic lunch. The afternoon is yours to explore the island’s walking trails, relax on the beach, or continue paddling with your guide. *Please note that this sea kayaking itinerary is weather-dependent, and your guide may alter the plan to match the abilities of the group and the local conditions on the day. In some situations, it may not be possible to visit Quail Island.
