Farol of Nazareth, viewpoint of the site of Nazareth, Church of Our Lady of Nazareth, panoramic view. Ideal for wonderful photos. Currently, the great attraction of this city is the waves and surfing, thanks to the “Canhão da Nazaré”, an underwater geomorphological phenomenon that allows the formation of giant and perfect waves. It is the largest underwater slope in Europe, with about 170 kilometers along the coast, which reaches a depth of 5000 meters.
Ordered to build in 1577 by King Sebastian, it was a fortification for the defense of the fishing village. The Interpretative Center of the Nazareth Canyon contains scientific information, a model of the Nazareth cannon, images and information about the German submarine U-963, sunk off the coast of Nazareth. The “Surfer Wall” is an exhibition created in 2016 that aims to demonstrate the recognition of surfers who seek to overcome the giant waves of Praia do Norte and consists of the permanent exhibition of boards offered by these.
Praia da Nazare
The long half-moon-shaped sandy beach, which is also the seafront of the city, is known for its magnificence and the vivid coloured tiles that decorate the white sandy beach in contrast to the blue of the water. Facing the sea, on the right side, we see an impressive promontory. This is the Sitio, where we have one of the most well-known panoramas of the Portuguese coast. There are 318 meters of rock falling to the peak to the sea, to which one reaches on foot, for the most courageous, or by lifting. Ideal for a snack or lunch, (not included).
