Belur Math

Belur Math was founded in 1897 by Swami Vivekananda, the chief disciple of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. It was envisioned as a center for spiritual growth, learning, and spreading the teachings of both Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda. The architecture of Belur Math is unique, blending Hindu, Islamic, and Christian elements to symbolize the message of harmony and unity that Swami Vivekananda strongly believed in. At the heart of the complex stands the Sri Ramakrishna Temple, a grand and beautifully designed shrine dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. The temple houses his sacred relics and is admired for its soaring towers and intricate carvings, combining architectural styles from across India.

Dakshineswar Kali Temple

The Dakshineswar Kali Temple is located on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, a branch of the Ganges, about 12 kilometers north of Kolkata’s city center. The temple complex is famous for its striking architecture, with the grand main temple dedicated to Goddess Kali, surrounded by a number of smaller shrines honoring other deities. The main temple is a magnificent five-spired structure built in the traditional Bengali “Nava Ratna” (nine-spired) style. Its presiding deity is Goddess Kali, worshipped here in her fierce form as the Divine Mother. The black stone idol of Kali stands upon the chest of Lord Shiva, symbolizing the deep connection between the two deities.
