Highlights: [U35 (under 35) artists who symbolize KMoPA] As this is the 30th anniversary exhibition of the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts (KMoPA), we wanted to create an exhibition that connects to the origins of photography and its future. The themes that emerged from this were "Adventure" (first half) and "Portraits" (second half). Furthermore, by adding the category of U35 (under 35), which symbolizes KMoPA, we will be exhibiting a number of works that can be said to be the origins of these photographers.

[From Faces to Landscapes] When you hear "Photography and Portraits," do you imagine an exhibition filled with faces? As the subtitle "From Faces to Landscapes" suggests, this exhibition does not limit portraits to those that capture faces. The etymology of the word "portrait" includes the meaning of "to bring out," but we believe that a portrait is not just about showing an appearance, but about bringing out something related to the person's existence. And people are inseparably connected to the environment and landscapes that surround them. This exhibition features 25 artists. What emerges from the theme of portraits, transcending the boundaries of portraits, documentaries, snapshots, and landscapes?

[Patri Exhibition] Entrance Hall Patri – Special viewing space for the photo collection of the first director, Hosoe Eikoh. March 20th (Thursday, holiday) – October 13th (Monday, holiday), 2025. *Please note: the museum will be closed from June 16th (Monday) to July 4th (Friday) for exhibit changes. Eikoh Hosoe, one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century, served as the founding director of the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts since its opening in July 1995. He launched and led the Young Portfolio (YP) project, an initiative that supports emerging photographers by collecting, selecting, and exhibiting their work. Deeply passionate about nurturing new talent, he played a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of photographic artists. This exhibition is presented as a tribute to Director Hosoe, offering a space where visitors can freely explore his remarkable photo collection and written works. Born in 1933 in Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, and raised in Tokyo, Hosoe began his journey in photography after winning the top student prize in the 1951 Fuji Photo Contest. In 1959, he co-founded the independent photography collective “VIVO” with fellow artists Shomei Tomatsu, Ikko Narahara, Kikuji Kawada, and others, becoming a key figure during the transformative era of postwar Japanese photography. His celebrated works include the deeply narrative series “Ordeal by Roses” (1963) featuring Yukio Mishima and “Kamaitachi” (1969) with butoh dancer Tatsumi Hijikata. Hosoe’s impact extended beyond image-making—he was dedicated to photographic education, cultural outreach, and the development of public collections both in Japan and internationally. He is Professor Emeritus at Tokyo Polytechnic University and served as director of this museum from its inception.

- Facility Introduction -

Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Art (K*MoPA) is a photography museum surrounded by the clear air and lush greenery of the Kiyosato Plateau, located at the southern foot of the Yatsugatake Mountains.
Our museum has three basic principles, and we collect artworks based on these principles. We hope to deepen relationships between people through photography. We look forward to your visit.

- Limited time photo exhibition -

Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts (K.MoPA, Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture) will hold the second half of its 30th anniversary exhibition, "Photography and Portraits: From Faces to Landscapes," from July 5th (Sat.) to October 13th (Mon., national holiday), 2025.

The museum's opening exhibition in 1995 began with "Photographs by 25 People in Their 20s," featuring some of Japan's most representative postwar photographers, with the aim of inspiring and encouraging young photographers.

As a sign of homage, the 30th anniversary exhibition will be held in two parts, carefully selecting "25 U35 (under 35) photographs" from the KMoPA collection of over 10,000 pieces, from a new perspective, in order to reexamine the origins of photography and the origins of KMoPA. Following the theme of "Adventure" in the first part, the second part will look at the layered relationships between the self, others, society, and landscapes, with the theme of "Portraits." How does the world appear through photography?

Guest Curator: Aki Kusumoto (Landschaft / Independent Curator, Photo Critic)
