Pyramids of Giza
The Giza pyramid complex, also known as the Giza necropolis, sits on the Giza Plateau near Greater Cairo, Egypt. It includes the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, along with their surrounding structures and the iconic Great Sphinx. These remarkable monuments were built during Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom, around 2600 to 2500 BC. The site also features cemeteries and the remains of a village where the workers lived. Located about 9 kilometers west of the Nile River on the edge of the Western Desert, the complex is roughly 13 kilometers southwest of central Cairo. Together with the nearby ancient city of Memphis, it was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979.
The Sphinx of Memphis
The Great Sphinx of Giza is the most famous monument at the site. Carved directly from the bedrock during the 4th Dynasty (around 2613–2494 BC), it is also the oldest. In ancient Egypt, sphinxes symbolized the king with a lion’s body, representing his strength and authority.
