Valley of the Whales (Wadi Al-Hitan)

By safari car 4×4 you will go to The Valley of the Whales (known in Arabic as Wadi Al-Hitan) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Egypt’s Western Desert, about 150 km southwest of Cairo and near the Fayoum Oasis. It is one of the most significant fossil sites in the world for understanding the evolution of whales. Significance: Home to fossil remains of the earliest, now extinct, suborder of whales – the Archaeoceti. These fossils show the transition of whales from land-based to marine life. What to See: Fossil skeletons of Basilosaurus and Dorudon (ancient whale species) Fossils of prehistoric sea creatures, such as sharks and rays A small museum (Wadi Al-Hitan Fossil and Climate Change Museum) with displays about whale evolution and the ancient environment Natural desert landscapes, sand dunes, and rare plant and animal life
