The Mercato di Mezzo has been, since the Middle Ages, a place of flavors and meeting, of commerce, of memory and of the gastronomic tradition of the city. Following the unification of Italy, it was transformed into the first covered market in the city and, after the 2014 redevelopment intervention, it is now a space where you can buy or consume excellent food and wine products and dishes on the spot. The Mercato di Mezzo is open seven days a week, from 8.30 to midnight, and often offers tasting appointments and meetings related to the culture of food.
The Herb Market in Bologna, in its current form, was designed in 1910 by Arturo Carpi and Luigi Mellucci, engineer. Inside the building took place the "treccole", typical food stalls, definitively moved from Piazza Maggiore. Nowadays is possible to find everykind of spicies and food delicacies from every corner of Italy.
The heart of the city, Piazza Maggiore is the result of centuries-old transformations that gradually enriched it with important buildings: the Basilica of San Petronio, the Palazzo dei Notai, the Palazzo d'Accursio, the Palazzo del Podestà and the Palazzo dei Banchi. It dates back to 1200, when the Municipality began to acquire houses and land to build a square which on one hand should have represented the importance of the municipal institution and on the other bring together the various city activities (exchanges, trade and services of various kinds). Our guide will explain the history of the city starting from the main palaces and monuments that look into this square.
