Itinerary

Santiago Atitlan

Get ready to embark on a truly marvelous tour as we pick you up from your hotel in the central area of Santiago Atitlan or Panajachel. Once you meet our guide, you'll embark on a delightful private boat ride across the lake, heading towards the charming village of Santiago Atitlan. This part of the tour is exclusively for those staying in Panajachel, as it is in Santiago Atitlan where a warm and welcoming local family awaits you to share their gastronomy, textiles, crafts, and rich traditions.

Santiago Atitlan

Once we arrive in the village of Santiago, we will go to the home of the welcoming family who will proudly share their traditions with you. We will begin by preparing a traditional dish. You can choose from the following options, considering the ingredients and your cravings for the day, or if you have a specific dish you'd like to learn about. Choose between: 1. Patín (a traditional dish from Santiago Atitlán): Small, dried, and salted fish accompanied by a tomato sauce and wrapped in Maxán leaves, a local plant. 2. Caldo de gallina criolla: A hearty soup prepared with free-range chicken, accompanied by vegetables and rice. 3. Pulique: Pork meat in a rich tomato sauce with tortilla dough, served with boiled potatoes and rice. Whichever of these three dishes you choose, will be accompanied by a refreshing natural hibiscus drink. Additionally, you will see and learn how to make your own tortillas. This interactive part of the tour allows you to actively participate.

Next, you will delve into the world of traditional textiles. As you may have already noticed, the traditional garments are vibrant and hold deep cultural and ancestral significance for the indigenous communities. Each village uses a distinct color palette that represents its identity, and they create unique designs and embroidered patterns specific to its community. It serves as a non-verbal language, allowing people to recognize the origin of individuals by their attire. You will learn about the colors and embroidered motifs found in the textiles of Santiago. These textiles are crafted using entirely natural materials. The fibers are 100% hand-processed cotton, dyed with natural products, and woven using the backstrap loom, an ancient technique passed down from generation to generation, from mother to daughter. Additionally, you will discover the time and dedication required to create each piece and the profound meanings behind the chosen figures and colors.
