The austere and grandiose site of Goddess Pampa, today's Hampi, was the capital to the Vijayanagara Empire (14th-16th Cent CE) that ruled South India. The once famous place known to have untold wealth & prosperity is home more than 1600 surviving structures that include fort walls, market shops, city gateways, check posts, stables, tanks, riverside features, royal buildings, temples, pillared halls called mantapas, etc. It fell to ruins after a huge war, much like Pompey’s Rome. Today the excavated ruins are a Unesco World Heritage Site.
ANEGUNDI - is a quaint village, today, situated on the banks of Tungabhadra River across Hampi. Historically, it was the older capital of the Vijayanagara Kingdom. It is also a part of the Hampi - World Heritage Site.
