Join me for a 3.5-hour walking tour of Lisbon, designed for writers and poetry lovers alike. Led by a knowledgeable local tour guide who is also a writer and poet, this tour offers a unique opportunity to explore the inner and outer landscapes of Lisbon through the lens of poetry. Immerse yourself in the world of Portuguese poetry as we read some of the country's most notable writers, including Luís de Camões, Cesário Verde, Sophia de Mello Andersen, and more. We will read poems in both the original Portuguese and English translations so that we can savor the music of the original language. Rather than analyzing or interpreting poetry, we'll let it speak for itself, allowing you to experience its beauty and power in a new and profound way.
We'll begin our journey into the poetic soul of Lisbon by paying homage to one of its greatest literary figures: Luís de Camões. As we stand before his majestic statue, we'll be transported back to the Renaissance era through the poet's epic work "The Lusiads" which celebrated Portugal's seafaring adventures and cultural heritage.
As we step inside the iconic Brasileira Café, we'll be greeted by the dazzling beauty of its Belle Époque décor and transported back to a time when the world was on the brink of modernity. We'll admire some of the most renowned modernist paintings reproduced, whose works adorned the walls of the café, creating a vibrant and eclectic atmosphere.
We'll spend some time in front of the birthplace of one of the most brilliant minds in Portuguese literature: Fernando Pessoa. Together, we'll delve into Pessoa's life and work, and discover how he revolutionized Portuguese literature and influenced generations of poets and thinkers.
