The picturesque HALLSTATT owes its existence to the rich salt deposits. Mighty salt chambers were discovered there more than 4,000 years ago. To this day, the "white gold" is mined in the "oldest salt mine in the world" above Hallstatt. With its almost 4,000-year-old past, Hallstatt offers a wide range of activities: the Celtic grave finds, the salt mine, the prehistoric museum, the small area nested houses, the churches, the cemetery with the ossuary and the "oldest pipeline in the world". The finds on the world-famous burial ground in the Hallstatt high valley testify to the salty prosperity of prehistoric times. It is thanks to these graves and the finds, which were perfectly preserved due to the special climate inside the mountains, that this epoch was given its own name: the "Hallstatt period".
One of the most beautiful things to do to discover the beauty of Lake Hallstatt is definitely a trip on the lake. In the summer months, two different routes across the lake are offered. And if you stand at the stern of one of the excursion boats and watch the foaming waves, you can get a little deeper into the thought of how mankind gained power over the elemental power of the water.
