Itinerary

The name of Ixtlán means "place of fibers", it was translated into Nahuatl after the Spanish conquest. But the original name in Zapotec is Laa Yetzi: “laa” means leaf, and “yetzi”, thick, that is, thick leaf or magueyera. The second part of the name was given in honor of Benito Juárez, who was born in Guelatao, just 4 km from Ixtlán. Due to its biodiversity, this region is considered one of the 17 most interesting areas in the world, where four varieties of climate coexist: cold, cold temperate, semi-tropical and tropical cold. Be amazed by the panoramic view of the Mirador del Cerro de Cuachirindoo. In this beautiful viewpoint there is a monument to the Zapotec warriors Juppa and Cuachirindoo. At this point you can enjoy an unparalleled view of Ixtlán, as well as the surrounding communities.

Guelatao is a small mountain community, famous for being the birthplace of Don Benito Juárez García, Benemérito de las Américas. Its name means in Zapotec "Laguna del Encanto" or "Laguna Encantada". Located in the mountainous landscape of the Sierra Norte, Guelatao offers its visitors various cultural and historical attractions. A must-see is the lagoon that exists on the site, in which - oral records count - Juárez used to graze his sheep, a fact that commemorates the statue that exists on the site. Around the lagoon there are gardens and lush juniper trees.

The Guelatao Enchanted Lagoon is located in the quiet town of Guelatao de Juárez. The lagoon is surrounded by tall trees, green grasses, and some carefully tended gardens. It is the perfect place to simply sit and enjoy the landscape or to have a picnic among nature. Guelatao has probably become a popular tourist destination due to the fact that in this heavenly place, President Benito Juárez went from being a poor shepherd to being the best known president in the history of Mexico.
