Barrio La Sierra or Comuna 8 is another comuna that was ground zero in the drug war and underwent radical transformation when the families realized the resources they had in the hillside of Medellín to survive and created a urban coffee farm. You will take the metrocable high above the city to Villa Sierra, one of the first distant hillside neighborhoods to get the tram system. You will learn the history of how the recession of the 1970s and global drug trade of the 1980s pushed farmers into the city, but only to find no place to call home. They made homes on unsanctioned plots of land and used innovative ways to get power, water and simply live. La Sierra survived one of the deadliest conflicts in Medellín by resilience, peace and progression. Walk the streets of Comuna 8, hear their story, and experience the full coffee growing, harvesting, and making process with local farmers right in the hills of Medellín! La Sierra awaits you!
