Surrounding Siem Reap are often temple ruins, left aside to focus on the landmarks that make Angkor such an attraction. These off-the-chart ruins have played a crucial part in the development of the Khmer Empire. One of these lies hidden in the far north-western corner of the former Angkor kingdom – Banteay Chhmar.

Banteay Chhmar is located around 60 kilometres away from Serey Sophoan and was constructed during the reign of Jayavarman VII in the 12th/13 century. The central temple once held an image of Srindrakumaraputra (the Crown Prince), probably a son of Jayavarman VII. Before we return to Siem reap, we will stop to visit Prasat Banteay Toap .Banteay Torp is a remote temple located 7.7km south-southeast of Banteay Chhmar (roughly 11 kilometers by modern road). Its name means "the Citadel of the Army", and likely refers to the military garrison stationed here during the reign of King Jayavaramn VII (r. 1181-1219).

Banteay Chhmar Temple

Banteay Chhmar Temple is one of Cambodia’s national treasures. Dating from the Angkorian period, it is a precious and irreplaceable link to the cultural heritage of the Khmer people. There are countless Buddhist images and startling bas-reliefs of Angkorian-era life that signify its importance as a temple complex. For 800 years, the temple has remained mostly undiscovered and untouched. The forces of nature resulting in overgrowth and collapse. Recent times, unfortunately, have seen numerous acts of egregious looting.

The purpose of the temple is not known, but conceivably it may have been built either to commemorate the military's recent conquests or as the religious centerpiece of a garrison-city located here.
