Hidden in the beautiful district of Monti in Rome, in the characteristic church of San Pietro in Vincoli, is one of the greatest masterpieces of Italian art, Michelangelo's Moses, an example of great craftsmanship and incomparable beauty.
It is one of the most interesting and ancient basilicas in Rome, built before 385 and dedicated to San Clemente, the third pope after St. Peter. It consists of two superimposed churches, built on Roman buildings of the Republican age and on the remains of a temple of the god Mithras.
It is the oldest basilica in the West as well as the cathedral of Rome. The land on which it stands was donated to the Church by the Emperor Constantine, fresh from conversion, as thanks for the victory of Ponte Milvio. It was Pope Miltiades who built the first basilica there, shortly after the edict of Milan (313).
