In Edinburgh, Scotland, there is a charming little Gothic cemetery, Greyfriars Kirkyard, which is reputed to be the most haunted cemetery in the world. Greyfriars Cemetery takes its name from the Franciscan monastery that once stood on the site. In 1561, noting that it was impossible to continue to bury the parishioners in the church, for lack of space but also because of the "smells and inconveniences of summer", the council of the city decided to remove the central Edinburgh cemetery, choosing the courtyard of the former Greyfriars Monastery.
