Amboseli is famous for its big game and its great scenic beauty – and the landscape is dominated by the towering Mount Kilimanjaro. The name Amboseli comes from the Maasai place name, Empusel, meaning open plain. The park lies immediately north-west of Mount Kilimanjaro, on the border with Tanzania. The Park covers 392 square km, and forms part of the much larger 3,000 square km Amboseli ecosystem. The National Park embodies five main wildlife habitats (open plains, acacia woodland, rocky thorn bush country, swamps and marshland) and covers part of a Pleistocene lake basin, now dry. Within this basin is a temporary lake, Lake Amboseli, which floods during years of heavy rainfall. Animals found in the park include the African elephant, buffalo, impala, lion, cheetah, hyena, giraffes, zebra, and wildebeest among others
Visit the observation hill and have a panoramic view of the park, appreciate the abundance of bird life and animals in the swamp below. As the sun sets and the snow peak of Kilimanjaro reflect the rays of the dying sun
