Itinerary

Start your memoir-inspired journey in the Latin Quarter and Place de la Contrescarpe, a small square in the very center of the neighborhood. The lively place truly can be called a moveable feast in Paris; with all its cafes, terraces, and bustling movement of tourists and locals alike, it offers perfect people-watching opportunities. At the square established in 1852, you can find the Café des Amateurs from the book, which is nowadays Café Delmas. The place was frequented by some drunkards next door and wasn’t very attractive for Hemingway; however, he started his book with its description: "The Cafe des Amateurs was the cesspool of the Rue Mouffetard, that wonderful narrow crowded market street which led into the Place Contrescarpe."

The quote takes us to the "wonderful narrow, crowded market street that led into Place Conrescarpe." Rue Mouffetard is waiting to be explored. With so many unique stores, wine shops, eateries, and attractions, it remains as busy as it was back then, only now tourists make it even more crowded than before.

This address was a new chapter in the lives of Hemingway and his wife. This is where they rented a 2-room apartment on the 3rd floor and stayed there for more than a year and a half. Recall the description of their neighborhood and the apartment with "no hot water and no toilet facilities except an antiseptic container," but it was cheap enough for them to pay rent at the time.
