This tour combines one of the world's most important museums of ancient seafaring, the remains of the largest Roman theatre north of the Alps and possibly the most atmospheric museums in Germany, the Sanctuary of Isis and Magna Mater. Together these three highlights will give you a good understanding of the life and times of the Romans nearly two thousand years ago.

In the museum you will see the almost 2000 year-old wrecks of several Roman ships which were sensationally discovered in Mainz in the 1980's. We will walk between impressive life-size reconstructions which show not only the engineering skills of the Roman shipbuilders but also give us an insight into life at this important frontier of the Roman Empire.
Just a short walk away are the remains of the largest Roman theatre north on the Alps with a capacity of about 10,000 people. Here not only comedies and tragedies were staged but also politicians met annually to wheel and deal.
Located under a shopping mall in the city centre is the well-preserved Sanctuary of the Roman Temple of Isis and Magna Mater. The ambient lighting contributes to the atmosphere of this archaeological area and we are transported back to an ancient and distant world. Follow the see-through trail above the excavations and marvel at the well-displayed and diverse objects discovered at the site such as the spellbinding curse tablets.
