Our Favourites

Learn about the history of the Mayan inhabitants as you explore one of Belize's most popular Mayan sites.

Xunantunich is a Mayan archaeological site located in Belize near the Guatemalan border. Its name means “Virgin of Stone” in Mayan, according to local legend dating back to the 1800s. You'll cross the river by car, accessible by ferry, to reach the site. The visit promises magnificent interactive discoveries. Sitting atop an artificial limestone ridge, this Mayan city will impress you with its pyramidal buildings and stucco frescoes. The piramid of “el Castillo” is one of the major monuments of a civilization that reached its apogee between the 7th and 10th centuries AD. It offers a 360° view of the picturesque landscapes of the Mopan Valley and the other remains of the city.
