Hantangang River Geopark is the first geopark in Korea to be formed around a river and includes the Hantangang River, which originates in Pyeonggang-gun, Gangwon-do, North Korea, and the confluence of the Imjin River located downstream. The current Hantangang River and some parts of the Imjin River were formed by a volcanic eruption about 500,000 to 130,000 years ago, and the lava that flowed at that time created a variety of beautiful terrains and landscapes, such as basalt cliffs, columnar joints, and waterfalls. On July 7, 2020, the Hantangang River was certified as a UNESCO Global Geopark by the UNESCO Executive Board in Paris, France.
Goseokjeong Goseok is a granite rock about 15m high in the Hantangang Valley. A pavilion called Goseokjeong is nearby, and the valley in the area is also called Goseokjeong.
