A Visit to Stone Town, you’ll find the fascinating Prison Island, a serene getaway rich in history and natural beauty. The island is home to Aldabra tortoises, which were brought from the Seychelles in 1919, and they roam freely across the land. Located only about half an hour from Stone Town, this island offers an excellent spot for snorkeling in crystal-clear waters and sunbathing on its peaceful shores.

The island holds a unique historical significance. It was initially used as a quarantine station before the British built a prison for Stone Town in the 1890s. However, the prison building was never actually put into use. Today, visitors can explore the remains of the prison structure, as well as the lush surroundings that make this island a popular destination for both history buffs and nature lovers alike.

Just a short and scenic boat ride from the heart of Stone Town lies Prison Island, a peaceful retreat with a fascinating past. Officially known as Changuu Island, it is perhaps most famous today for its colony of Aldabra giant tortoises, which were gifted from the Seychelles in 1919. These gentle giants, some of which are over a century old, roam freely within a sanctuary, offering visitors a unique chance to interact with one of the world's longest-living species. Only about 30 minutes from Zanzibar’s bustling capital, the island is not only a haven for wildlife enthusiasts but also a favorite spot for those seeking crystal-clear waters and sun-drenched relaxation. Its surrounding reefs are ideal for snorkeling, with vibrant marine life and calm, warm waters that appeal to both beginners and experienced swimmers. Historically, Prison Island has served multiple purposes. Initially designated as a quarantine station for yellow fever cases, it later saw the construction of a prison in the late 19th century under British colonial rule. However, despite its name and the imposing stone structure that still stands, the prison was never actually used to house inmates from Stone Town.
