Spend an unforgettable day in Mtskheta - the former capital city of Georgia. The tour will start at 9am from Tbilisi, the first location to be visited will be Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, which was the religious center of Christian Georgia for centuries. Then we will visit the 6th-century cross monastery, which is the first example of a cross-type church, it represents a new level of sculptural decoration of architecture. From this place, there is a beautiful view of the city of Mtskheta and the confluence of the rivers Mtkvari and Aragvi. From the Cross Monastery, we will drive to the Shiomghvime Monastery,which was founded by one of the Assyrian fathers, Shio, in the second half of the 6th century. The monastery is located close to Mtskheta, and on the way we will pass through beautiful valleys and canyons. Jvari Monastery- VI century church and monastery, located in the east of Mtskheta, at the mouth of the river Mtkvari and Aragvi, on the rocky mountain peak. Jvari Monastery is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The masterpiece of medieval Georgian architecture Svetitskhoveli is the main Orthodox Christian Cathedral in Georgia. This is the main pilgrimage place on the Silk Road, the burial place of Christ’s Robe, the tomb place of Georgian Kings, and the most frequently visited place in Georgia. Built-in 1010-1029 cc, it is listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. The name is Svetitskhoveli is translated as a “live-giving pillar”.
Shio-Mgvime is located in a beautiful forested place on the left bank of the river Mtkvari in Georgia. The road follows a narrow limestone canyon from the main square in the town Mtskheta. The medieval Orthodox monastery consists of several buildings from different periods: The oldest one is the Monastery of St. John the Baptist (dated 560-580) - the simple cruciform building with an octagonal dome; The Upper Church Theotokos (12th c) was a domed church destroyed by invasion and in 1678 was restored as Basilica; Refectory (12th -17th cc); the Cave of St. Shio (6th c ) and a small chapel (12th c) adorned with medieval murals stands separately on a nearby hill.
