Alfama is the oldest neighborhood of Lisbon. A time capsule of narrow and labyrinthine streets, and viewpoints overlooking Saint George Castle, the town and the Tagus River. We stop at one of them.
Get to know the details of the Great Earthquake and how Lisbon rose from the ashes. Baixa, or Pombaline Downtown, takes its name from Marquis of Pombal, the prime minister of Portugal who led the reconstruction of Lisbon after the 1755 Great Earthquake. A grid of streets, with innovative earthquake-resistant constructions, one of the first in the world.
Belém is the emblematic district of the Portuguese Age of Discovery (1400s-1500s). Home to historical landmarks that remind us of Portugal's maritime past. Like the world heritage sites of 1500s - the Belém Tower (photo stop) and the Jerónimos Monastery (outside only, we won't go in). There the Monument to the Discoveries stands out - a gigantic ship in limestone, ready to set sail on the Tagus River, with Henry the Navigator at the bow. And no trip to Belém would be complete without a stop at "Pastéis de Belém" to sample our world-famous egg custard tart (not included - your guide will help you navigate the lines and find a table).
