During the 1930s the Palmer's roots as a farming community grew with the Matanuska Colony Project. Over 200 families relocated to the Palmer area under the New Deal. Many of Palmer's downtown buildings were constructed during the 1930s.
We'll take a walk back in time learning about what made the area so enticing for farmers, how the project unfolded, and the influence it left on our town.
During our time together we will walk about 1 mile on paved sidewalks through downtown Palmer's historic district. On the tour, we will visit 2 historic buildings.
We will meet at the Palmer Visitor Center where we will start the trip with a review of what glaciers left behind thousands of years ago and how they've been integral to the area's agricultural story. We'll discuss the peoples who have called the area home for thousands of years - the Ahtna and Dena'ina.
From the visitor center, we'll begin our walking tour of the downtown Palmer area, visiting local monuments and historic buildings along the way.
