I have lived in both Amsterdam and New York City and speak both Dutch and English, which gives me an extra advantage in reading the history of the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam in great richness and context. I also am an archaeology undergraduate.

DISCOVERY & SETTLEMENT We will meet at New Amsterdam Plein at the Costello Plan which is a bronze map reproduction of New Amsterdam right next to the South Ferry subway 1 line. Here we will walk down to the coast and look out at Noten island (Nut Island) where the Dutch first settled and recount the history of the discovery of this part of the coast by sailors and the later settlement.

National Museum of the American Indian

This is ironically the original site of Fort Amsterdam. Hear the story of how the early settlers arrived in Lower Manhattan, built fortifications and lived with the existing people. (Note: We are not entering the museum, it is just an important location as part of the journey to learn about early New Amsterdam)
