You will drive through the touristically neglected inland with its endless vineyards and olive groves, visit old churches, small chapels and picturesque villages and experience the hospitality of the old and young Cretans up close, accompanied by a local guide.

Itinerary

Stavrakia

Our starting point is Ammoudara beach, west of the city of Heraklion, wherefrom we will head south. After 5 km, we will arrive at the University of Crete and the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), where we will change direction and cycle west. After 12km (approximately 40 minutes) and following a route with little traffic, we will reach the village of Stavrakia, located at an altitude of 240m. This will be our first stop since setting off on our trip. While in the village, there are some options for activities, such as going to admire Mount Juktas in the east. We can drink some water and rest there before we start cycling again towards our destination.

Agios Myron

Said destination is the village of Agios Myron, located at an altitude of 440m at the foot of Mount Psiloritis. We will reach it after cycling for 17km (about one hour and 10 minutes). We can take a break there and visit the church and tomb of Saint Myron, one of the first bishops of Crete who lived during the 4th century AC. We can also check out a cave that is close to the temple, where we can find Saint Myron’s famous and miraculous holy water.

Agios Myron

The school’s clock tower is another interesting sight in this village, as it is visible from almost everywhere around the area. This clock was originally built for the church tower, but it didn’t suit it at all and was therefore placed at the school. The village of Agios Myron is built on top of two hills and the view here is nothing short of amazing.
