The mausoleum of Moulay Idriss II is a zaouia located in the heart of the Fez el-Bali district, the oldest district of Fez. The mausoleum is dedicated to the Idrissid emir Idris II and houses his tomb. It is considered, along with the Quaraouiyine mosque, to be the most famous and most visited monument in the city.
Fes el-Bali is an old fortified medina with narrow pedestrian streets with ornate entrances such as the Bab Guissa Gate and the Blue Gate. The grand 9th-century Al Quaraouiyine University is covered in brightly colored hand-painted ceramics, while the imposing R'cif Mosque overlooks a bustling market square. Vendors in the souks offer perfumes, spices, lamps and leather goods. The food scene ranges from street kebabs to elegant gourmet restaurants.
The Chouwara Tannery offers, along with the other tanneries, one of the most picturesque and smelly vistas in the city. The Chouara tannery is the largest of the four traditional tanneries still present in the heart of the Fez el-Bali medina. Here you will find endless pits filled with natural dyes responsible for the production and coloring of leather from lamb, beef, goat and camel. Leather making process The first step in traditional tanneries is to introduce the hides into large vats filled with lime and pigeon droppings, where they rest for several days. Then, the remaining hairs are removed and the skins are colored by introducing them into large vats filled with natural dyes. Once the skins are colored and dry, they will be passed on to craftsmen who will transform them into bags, suitcases, shoes and coats for sale to the public.
