Known as an “unparalleled alpine lake,” Yellowstone Lake is the largest lake in Yellowstone National Park and one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world. With an average water temperature of just 5°C, it remains frozen for about half the year. The lake is vast and deep, and due to its size and local climate, it can resemble a stormy inland sea. Water temperatures rarely exceed 19°C even in summer, making it unsuitable for swimming—humans can typically survive only 20–30 minutes in the water.
- Hayden Valley (30 Minutes)
Located between Mud Volcano and Canyon Junction, Hayden Valley is Yellowstone’s second-best wildlife viewing area after Lamar Valley. This broad, grassy valley with a river running through it is ideal for spotting animals like bears and wolves, especially at dawn or dusk. Bring binoculars for the best experience.
- Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone (40 Minutes)
