There’s no better way to spend a winter or spring day than exploring the Overberg region of Cape Town— where you're captivated by the gentle giants of the sea, the Southern right whales, and later, savoring the Cape’s finest cool-climate wines in the idyllic Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven and Earth) Valley. Add to that a close-up encounter with African penguins at Stony Point, and you’ve experienced a truly unforgettable slice of South African magic.

The journey itself, both to and from these destinations, is scenic and soul-stirring—so much so that by the time you arrive, you may find yourself wishing the road would stretch on just a little farther.

Itinerary

Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve
Pass-by Only

En route to Hermanus, just 40 minutes east of Cape Town, rises the majestic Hottentots Holland mountain range—soaring up to 1,000 meters above sea level. These ancient mountains were pushed upward by tectonic forces over 100 million years ago, forming part of the geologically significant Cape Fold Belt. As your journey winds along the iconic Sir Lowry’s Pass, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of these dramatic peaks, their rugged slopes carving a path into the heart of the Overberg region. The natural beauty and sheer scale of the mountains make this stretch of the drive an unforgettable introduction to South Africa’s diverse landscapes.

Walker Bay Nature Reserve

Upon arriving at Hermanus New Harbour, you will receive a 20-minute safety briefing, along with an overview of what to expect out at sea. A marine biologist on board will offer fascinating insights into the whales—explaining why these gentle giants migrate to our shores during this time of the year. Our spacious vessel is licensed to carry up to 80 passengers, but we limit each trip to just 65 to ensure a more personal and enjoyable experience. After the briefing, you'll set out into Walker Bay in search of the whales. Known for their inquisitive nature, they often approach the boats—giving you a rare, close-up encounter. Some of them can weigh as much as 50 tons which is equivalent to ten fully grown African elephants!
