Derinkuyu Underground City is an ancient multi-level underground city located near the modern town of Derinkuyu in Nevşehir Province, Turkey. It extends to a depth of approximately 85 meters (280 feet) and is large enough to have sheltered as many as 20,000 people along with their livestock and food stores.
The city features numerous amenities such as wine and oil presses, stables, cellars, storage rooms, refectories, and chapels. Unique to Derinkuyu is a spacious room with a barrel-vaulted ceiling, believed to have been used as a religious school.
