  • History: The history of Derinkuyu Underground City dates back to B.C. It dates back to 3000 years ago. It was built by the first Christians to protect them from Roman and Arab attacks.
  • Depth and Number of Floors: The city has a depth of approximately 85 meters and 18 floors. However, today only 8 floors are open to visitors
  • Defense Systems: The city was protected by stone doors that could only be opened and closed from the inside. These stone gates were used to prevent threats from outside in times of danger.
  • There are many sections in Derinkuyu Underground City such as kitchens, dining halls, stables, churches, wineries and ventilation chimneys.
  • The city was discovered by chance in 1963 and opened to tourism in 1967. It has continued to fascinate its visitors ever since1.

Derinkuyu Underground City is an ancient multi-level underground city located near the modern town of Derinkuyu in Nevşehir Province, Turkey. It extends to a depth of approximately 85 meters (280 feet) and is large enough to have sheltered as many as 20,000 people along with their livestock and food stores.

The city features numerous amenities such as wine and oil presses, stables, cellars, storage rooms, refectories, and chapels. Unique to Derinkuyu is a spacious room with a barrel-vaulted ceiling, believed to have been used as a religious school. The city was heavily used during the Byzantine era for protection against invasions
