Sao Miguel
Begin driving to Furnas following pick-up. Enjoy the scenic drive down the island's southern shore until you arrive in Vila Franca do Campo, a historic village. Before proceeding to Furnas, stop at Senhora da Paz, a solitary church in the highlands with a breathtaking view of the town and tiny island. Walkthrough geothermal landscapes and see flaming volcanoes at Furnas (possible to swim in thermal pools for an extra fee). Watch as your meal, the famed local cozido, emerges from the volcanic soil's cooking holes. Get to the summit of the volcanic crater in the afternoon for a glimpse of Furnas and its lake from the Pico do Ferro viewpoint. Next, travel to the island's northeastern shore to observe Ribeira dos Caldeires' steep cliffs and waterfall. Return to Ponta Delgada through the north shore of the island, stopping at the stunning Santa Iria overlook along the route.
