The Samaria Gorge, the gem of the White Mountains, is the largest gorge in Europe, stretching 18 kilometers in the southern Chania district. Recognized by UNESCO's Man and Biosphere program in 1981, it protects valuable habitats. A visit to Samaria is essential for any trip to Chania, as its breathtaking beauty never disappoints.
The trail starts at Ksyloskalo on the Omalos plateau (1,227 meters altitude) and follows the riverbed, ending at Agia Roumeli. This well-marked, 5-6 hour hike is Greece’s most visited trail, open from April to October. Though not overly strenuous, some sections require caution. Your experienced guide ensures safety throughout.
