rewrite: Abu Simbel's temples will amaze you with their beauty and grandeur. They are among the most impressive monuments in the world.
The temples were relocated in a remarkable feat of engineering in the 1960s. They faced the risk of being submerged in Lake Nasser due to the construction of the High Dam. They were carefully moved to a higher site 60 meters above their original location on the cliff. The larger temple is dedicated to Ramesses II and the smaller one to his beloved wife Nefertari. On two special days of the year, the morning sun shines through the temple and reaches the statues of the four gods at the back of the cave.

The twin temples were originally carved out of the mountainside in the 13th century BC, during the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses II's 19th Dynasty. In the mountain temple, in the great colonnade, were eight columns in the guise of Ramses II, each almost 10 meters high. In 1960 the construction of the Aswan Dam started, which would create Lake Nasser and the temples would disappear under water. To save the temples, they were sawn into large blocks and rebuilt at a 65-meter elevation. Large concrete domes have been built with natural stone cladding on the outside and the temples placed inside, giving the appearance of being carved out of the rock on the spot.
