The temple of Zeus was built in the 5th cent. BC and was the largest one inn the Peloponnese. It worked as an architectural model for the landmark of Greece; the Parthenon of Athens. During the Antiquity, it hosted the gold-and-ivory statue of Zeus which was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
It is the oldest temple one may visit at the Olympic site. It was built in the 7th cent BC in honor of the wife of Zeus, Hera. During the first AD years worked as a museum, hosting several antiguities, one of which was found during the exvavations almost intact. It is the marble statue of Hermes of Praxiteles. it is a masterpiece of the 4th cent BC, and niw it is exhibited in the archeological museum of Olympia. The temple of Hera also, hosts the ceremony of the lighting of the Olympic torch.
