The Louvre is one of the most visited and best known museums in the world and the largest in Paris since 1793. More than 8 million people visit the palace, located between the Seine and Rue de Rivoli, every year. The museum opened 222 years ago and merged with the Tuileries in 1870 to become one of the most beautiful and important palaces in Europe. The modern Louvre was born in 1882, and has now become a full-fledged cultural citadel, slowly absorbing the vast complex. Today, it is one of the world's most famous museums, with 60,000 square metres of space housing 35,000 exhibits, including the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo.
