Enjoy crystal clear waters and the most beautiful alpine views, particularly of Mount Rigi and Pilatus. Formed 12,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age, this lake spans 114 square km and reaches a maximum depth of 214 meters. It is very irregular in shape offering numerous prominent bays. In most places the shoreline rises steeply into mountains up to 1500m high. The lake was used for commercial transportation at the start of the 19th century before mass tourism took place, led by the British and the Americans 50 years later.
Bürgenstock. This mountain (alt. 1100 m) is almost entirely surrounded by Lake Lucerne. Today, it holds at luxury resort at the very top that is reachable also by the tallest outdoor elevator in Europe. In recent politics the Bürgenstock hosted the peace treaty for Sudan in 2002 and in 2004 EU accession negotiations were held with Turkey.
