It’s easy to see why writer Diana Gabaldon chose the spell-binding Scottish Highlands as the setting for her romantic time travel series, Outlander. Ancient, majestic and stunningly beautiful – it’s the perfect backdrop for her tales of history and romance. If you’re a fan of the Outlander books or TV series, a visit to Inverness would not be complete without an Outlander tour of the locations that inspired the stories.

What better place to start your Outlander tour than on the site where it all began. The standing stones of Craigh na Dun are based on the ancient Clava Cairns burial ground. This is where the main character Claire stumbled through a split stone, hurtling through time and into 1743. Be sure to get a photo with the now-famous split stone.
The Battle of Culloden was the final conflict during the Jacobite Risings. Taking place in 1746, it was a bloody and brutal battle, which features heavily in the Outlander series. Visit Culloden Battlefield where, in less than an hour, around 1,500 men lost their lives.
Castle Leod in Strathpeffer is said to be the inspiration behind Outlander’s Castle Leoch. Author Diana Gabaldon is now patron of the castle and has supported campaigns to have the building restored. The castle is not always open to the public, your guide will check prior to arrival.
