Step back in time and walk through history on this unforgettable day trip to Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius, two of Italy’s most iconic landmarks. Your journey begins with a guided exploration of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, frozen in time by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. As you stroll along the cobbled streets, you'll witness remarkably well-preserved ruins—homes, temples, theaters, baths, and even ancient graffiti—providing a vivid glimpse into daily life nearly 2,000 years ago. After Pompeii, ascend the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, the very volcano responsible for the city's destruction. A scenic drive takes you up to the national park, followed by a moderate hike to the summit. From the top, peer into the steaming crater and take in breathtaking panoramic views of the Bay of Naples and surrounding countryside. Standing on the rim of one of the world’s most famous volcanoes is a surreal and humbling experience—a true highlight of the tour.

Itinerary

Pompeii Archaeological Park

Pompeii was an ancient Roman city near modern Naples in the Campania region of Italy, in the territory of the comune of Pompei. Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area (e.g. at Boscoreale, Stabiae), was buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Many of the inhabitants were also buried before they could escape. The drive from Rome to Pompeii is around 3 hours.

Vesuvius National Park

Mount Vesuvius is a somma–stratovolcano located on the Gulf of Naples. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, Stabiae and other settlements. Vesuvius has a long historic and literary tradition. It was considered a divinity of the Genius type at the time of the eruption of AD 79: it appears under the inscribed name Vesuvius as a serpent in the decorative frescos of many lararia, or household shrines, surviving from Pompeii. An inscription from Capua to Iovi Vesuvio indicates that he was worshipped as a power of Jupiter; that is, Jupiter Vesuvius. The duration indicated includes the tour of Vesuvius and transportation from Pompeii to Vesuvius (and vice-versa) and from Pompeii to Rome.
