Itinerary

Coconino National Forest

Spanning nearly two million acres, the Coconino National Forest surrounds Flagstaff with a stunning mix of ponderosa pine forests, ancient lava flows, volcanic craters, and alpine meadows. It’s one of the most ecologically diverse forests in the country, with elevations ranging from 2,600 to over 12,000 feet. As you ride through, you’ll experience everything from shady woodland corridors to wide open clearings with panoramic views. Wildlife sightings are common, and the cool mountain air makes it a perfect summer riding destination.

Lava River Cave

Formed nearly 700,000 years ago by molten lava flowing underground, this mile-long lava tube is one of the longest in Arizona and a fascinating natural wonder. The entrance drops you into a pitch-black volcanic tunnel where temperatures stay around 42°F year-round, offering a stark contrast to the forest above. Though the cave is not part of the UTV trail itself, a quick stop here gives groups a chance to stretch their legs, explore the entrance, and snap photos of this surreal geological feature.

Parks

Located roughly midway between Flagstaff and Williams, Parks is a quiet, high-country community known for its wide meadows, ponderosa forests, and rustic ranchland. Though small, it marks an ideal spot to take a break, swap drivers, and enjoy the peaceful scenery. You'll pass near the edge of this region on your route—keep an eye out for elk grazing in open fields or hawks circling overhead. Sections of the original Historic Route 66, slowly being reclaimed by nature, will be visible here. Old oil cans, bottles, and relics from bygone travelers can still be found on the forest floor.
