️ Prison Island (Changuu Island) Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is a small island located about 5 kilometers northwest of Stone Town, Zanzibar. * History: Originally used to hold runaway slaves in the 19th century. Later, a prison building was constructed but never used for criminals. The island was then turned into a quarantine station for people with contagious diseases like yellow fever. It’s a popular tourist destination. Famous for its giant Aldabra tortoises, some over 150 years old. Visitors enjoy swimming, snorkeling, relaxing on the beach, and exploring the historic ruins. *Stone Town Stone Town is the old historical part of Zanzibar City and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since the year 2000.
