The Ben Youssef Madrasa, located in the heart of Marrakech’s medina, is one of the largest Islamic colleges in Morocco. Founded in the 14th century and rebuilt in the 16th century by the Saadians, it once housed up to 900 students. The architecture is a masterpiece of Islamic art, featuring intricately carved stucco, sculpted cedar wood, and colorful zellige tilework. A large central courtyard with a reflecting pool enhances the harmony of its design. A symbol of knowledge and spirituality, the madrasa reflects the historical importance of religious education in Morocco. Closed as a school in 1960, it is now a preserved monument open to visitors.
