Our home sits on the main street of Takayama’s Old Town, but the moment you step inside, the quiet and warmth will make you feel like time has slowed down. The house is built from wood and paper in the Hida region’s signature style. Though it comes with little inconveniences compared to newly renovated houses, we see them as part of its beauty.

We’ll start the experience by introducing you to the essential ingredients of Japanese cooking with welcome Japanese tea and snacks. Then we’ll guide you through preparing a traditional home-cooked meal at our kitchen. As we cook together, you’ll hear stories of life in Takayama, and what it means to live in harmony with nature and the seasons.

Hisa and Bob really put their hearts into every classes. This is more than just learning recipes. It’s about connection, culture, and feeling at home in a place far from home.

What's included in Japanese Cooking Class with Local Family in Takayama Old Town

(Subject to Option Inclusions)

We are a family from Takayama, and our roots run deep in the historic district of Kamisannomachi, where our family has lived for generations. We have a deep love for cooking and find joy in connecting with people through food. While we originally lived in Tokyo, working as a businessman and journalist, we decided to return to our childhood home to embrace a slower, more fulfilling life. Sharing authentic Japanese culture with visitors has now become our greatest passion. Our home is located on the main street of Old Town. This house, made of paper and wood, reflects the traditional architecture of the Hida region. Although it comes with its inconveniences, we choose to embrace these small discomforts, finding beauty and joy in the simple yet rich lifestyle that is unique to this area. Surrounded by the changing seasons and steeped in history, this house is our pride and joy. We hope to share its charm and the essence of Takayama with everyone who visits. In this experience, you will learn how to cook traditional Japanese Home Cooking with us. After a shot lectures of basic ingredients (dashi, soy souce etc), you will cook 3 dishes, miso soup and Japanese rice in authentic ways.
